The good news is we've continued to be blessed by the generosity of individual cash and food and clothing donations, unbelievably strong support and partnerships with organizations like Arkansas Children's Hospital, Centennial Garden, Mount St. Mary's High School, Catholic High School, The Diocese of Little Rock, St. Bartholomew's Parish, and many, many more. And of course, we continue to exist on nearly 100% Volunteer-Power! God bless our Volunteers. It sounds so trite to say we couldn't do it without you, but it's SO true at Helping Hand.
In 2018 Volunteers logged a staggering 18,106 hours working at the Helping Hand. Without our Volunteers, there would be no Helping Hand. For years we have maintained a paid staff of only 4 people, including me! We've held down massive costs by having a massive effort by those who have a heart to give their time to help feed the hungry. Our Volunteers are "family" and put the needs of others ahead of their own needs, and find fellowship and friendship in other like-minded folks. Though our backgrounds, ethnicity, religions are diverse, our common thread lies in our passion to help others. It gives us joy to share and care.
We have the best job in the world! We aim to put smiles on faces, and food in Hands. It's not without stress, but whenever we get low on supplies, or something breaks down, the Lord always provides. Right now we are faced with two very expensive challenges: the need for a new roof, and the need for re-paving our parking lot. Our building is a very old structure, and is a grand old building. The building was at one-time St. Bartholomew School, an African-American-only Catholic grade school, for black students before the Diocese was desegregated. We're so proud of the history and heritage of our building; so grateful for our neighbors, and we are glad to be a prominent member of this Community within the Central High Neighborhood of Little Rock.
In the coming weeks, I will be outlining more specifically the issues with our roof and parking lot, and the costs associated with replacement. We currently do not have the reserve funds for these capital improvement. This year more than most we reach out to you to help us help others by making a monetary contribution so we can maintain, repair and replace the infrastructure of this wonderful building.
